Wendy’s Ex, Kevin Hunter, Suffers Legal Setback In $7 Million Wrongful Termination Case Against ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ Producers
Kevin Hunter, the ex-husband of Wendy Williams, recently suffered a major legal setback.
According to court documents obtained by In Touch, on April 8th, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit overturned a previous legal victory for Hunter, which allowed his $7 million wrongful termination lawsuit against former Wendy Williams Show producers to proceed to a higher court.
Hunter initially sued Debmar-Mercury in 2023, arguing that the production company had no legal grounds to terminate his contract as a producer on The Wendy Williams Show after Wendy filed for divorce in 2019. He claimed his job was protected under New York law and that the company didn’t consider his contributions to the success of the show.
Debmar-Mercury denied the claim in court, stating that his job was not, in fact, covered under New York law, which prohibits employers from discriminating against employees based on their marital status or whether they are married. They argued the law doesn’t prevent someone from being terminated due to their marriage to a specific individual.

In September 2023, a federal judge ruled in favor of Hunter, allowing the case to proceed, asserting that his termination due to his pending divorce from Wendy constituted marital discrimination. The judge also denied Debmar-Mercury’s request to dismiss the case.
Following the ruling, the producers appealed the decision, leading to the Second Circuit’s decision to vacate the case and return it to a lower court, overturning the dismissal motion.
The lower court will now look at the case for further proceedings.
