Michelle Obama Shares How Dating The Wrong Men Led To Her Marrying Barack: You’ve got to try on some things to know what really fits.
Michelle Obama is giving her take on why dating—especially the messy kind—is actually important.
Speaking during an episode of her In My Opinion podcast, the former First Lady opened up about dating men who “just weren’t right” before marrying her husband, Barack Obama. She shared:
“I also think that dating is important… You’ve got to try on some things to know what really fits.”
Mrs. Obama went on to reference the iconic, and often chaotic, Sex and the City relationship between Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big, revealing that she had dated a few “Bigs” in her own life.

She added:
“I dated some Bigs… the version of the person who just wasn’t right, and I knew they weren’t right. But because I had those experiences, when Barack showed up… there was just complete and total honesty and trust…This was a man who knew what he wanted.”
She continued by saying that women often fall into a “guessing game” when dating—constantly trying to figure out whether a man is genuinely interested. And while some may start to believe that uncertainty is part of the fun, Mrs. Obama, who’s been married for 33 years, made it clear: that guessing game shouldn’t be confused with love.
“It’s game. And it’s an uncomfortable game if we’re honest with ourselves,” she said.
