Southwest Airlines To End Longstanding Free Checked Bags Policy Starting May 29 + Introduces $35 Fee For First Bag, $45 For The Second
Southwest customers, make sure you’re aware!
For the first time in its history, Southwest Airlines will begin charging for checked luggage starting Wednesday. The airline’s iconic “two bags fly free” policy will end for most new bookings, with a $35 fee for the first bag and $45 for the second.
The change applies to Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus, and Anytime fares purchased on or after May 29. Tickets booked before that date will still include two free checked bags. Travelers with Business Select tickets, A-List or A-List Preferred status, and those using a Southwest co-branded credit card will continue receiving at least one free bag.
The decision follows pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management and is part of a larger shift in Southwest’s strategy. The airline is also rolling out basic economy fares and will introduce assigned seating starting in 2026.
Will you still be flying with Southwest?
