Tyra Banks Opens Up About Getting The S*x Talk From Her Mother At 11 Years Old
Tyra Banks recently recalled the unconventional, yet effective, ways her mom taught her about the realities of having s*x.
During an appearance on The Kyle & Jackie O Show in Australia, Tyra and her mom, Carolyn London, opened up about their open and honest conversations growing up, including sensitive topics like dr*gs and s*x. Tyra shared that she first asked about the latter at just 11 years old, which led to an intense s*x talk during train ride where she couldn’t escape. Tyra recalled:
“She put me on a train. It was a two-hour train from Los Angeles to San Diego, like, a two-hour drive. And she gave me the birds and bees talk.”
She continued: “I knew [the] ‘Where did I come from?’ talk, but she gave me the talk about what a guy will whisper in your ear and how your body will feel and the things that your body will be experiencing. You know … when I was still a virgin, and she put me on a train so that I couldn’t run away.”
Tyra said her mom’s advice actually came in handy, recalling that during her first real makeout session, a boy whispered the exact things Carolyn had warned her about, prompting her to jump up and say:
“My mama said you would say that!”
Carolyn, who became a mom at 19 when she had Tyra’s older brother Devin, explained why she was always so upfront about tough topics, saying:
“One of the things I did was to approach your children in a way that you want to arm them to go out into the world. So no subject is taboo. If they ask you, they deserve the truth.”
She added: “It’s so important. So many parents say, ‘I don’t want them to know. I don’t want them to know.’ Then you send them out into the world ignorant, to be taken advantage of.”
Are you like Tyra’s mom when it comes to sensitive conversations with children?
