U.S. Coast Guard Calls Titan Submersible Implosion That Killed 5 People ‘Preventable’ After 2-Year Investigation

The tragic implosion of the Titan submersible that killed five people off the coast of Newfoundland two years ago was entirely “preventable,” the U.S. Coast Guard concluded after its investigation.

The report detailed multiple contributing factors, including OceanGate’s toxic workplace culture and a profit-driven approach that repeatedly ignored safety warnings from both experts and employees.

It also confirmed the implosion happened at 10:47 a.m. on June 18, 2023, instantly killing OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his 19-year-old son Suleman.

Rescue efforts were delayed after OceanGate’s protocol called for hours of surface searching before notifying authorities. A multinational search confirmed the disaster days later, when debris was found on the seafloor.

Despite OceanGate’s closure, investigators emphasized the need for stronger oversight and clearer international regulations for submersibles.
