“A Different World” Sequel Picked Up To Series At Netflix, Debbie Allen & Gina Prince-Bythewood To Serve As Executive Producers
#ADifferentWorld is officially returning with a sequel series, bringing viewers back to the iconic #HillmanCollege and introducing a new class of students.
You may recall we reported last year that a reboot was in development. On Monday (Nov. 10), #Netflix confirmed a series order for the project, which will feature 10 half-hour episodes in its first season. The spin-off will follow Deborah Wayne, played by Hell’s Kitchen star Maleah Joi Moon, the daughter of beloved original characters #DwayneWayne (Kadeem Hardison) and #WhitleyGilbert (Jasmine Guy).
According to the official logline, the series “follows Deborah as she enters her freshman year at her parents’ #HBCU alma mater and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape. She sets out to build her own legacy – while having the time of her life – alongside a whole new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest.”
The creative team is stacked. Felicia Pride will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series. #DebbieAllen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Rock Bythewood are also on board as executive producers, with Allen set to direct three episodes, including the premiere.
