Brian McKnight might not be winning father of the year anytime soon.
In a recent deep-dive interview with Marc Lamont Hill, Brian McKnight Jr. and his mother Julie McKnight opened up about their fraught relationship with #BrianMcKnight, and in particular, what happened during his brother Niko McKnight’s final days. According to Brian Jr., while Niko was battling cancer, all he wanted was to hear “I love you” from their father, a simple request the famed R&B singer allegedly refused.
“One of the darkest and coldest and most disheartening memories of my life is the day my brother calls me, sobbing with all he’s going through, looking de@th in the eye, to tell me I’m right about telling him not to call my father because I knew what was going to happen. Because I knew where my dad was. I told him, ‘Dad is gone,’” Brian Jr. said.
He continued, “All my brother wanted, needed, asked for, was my father to tell him he loves him. My father responds, ‘I can’t arbitarily say that I love you.’” The interview comes amid wider turmoil between Brian McKnight and his first family, a dynamic complicated by lawsuits and public accusations.
