50 Cent Appeals Loss In $1 Million Fight Over The Rights To Ex Shaniqua Tompkins’ Life Story
#50Cent took an L in court, and now he’s trying to run it back.
A New York judge shut down an attempt by his G-Unit Books company to win a default judgment against his ex and the mother of his oldest son, Shaniqua Tompkins. G-Unit argued Tompkins avoided being properly served and asked the court to basically hand them the win after she didn’t respond. But the judge wasn’t convinced. Tompkins says she never received the legal papers, doesn’t live at any of the addresses used, and hasn’t for years.

She claims she only found out about the lawsuit after reporters contacted her for comment; then quickly hired a lawyer and asked for more time to respond. The judge sided with her, finding she had a valid excuse for missing the deadline and potentially real defenses to raise. The court denied #GUnit’s request for an automatic win and gave Tompkins extra time to formally answer the complaint. A new deadline has been set, along with a virtual court date scheduled for May 5.

But 50 and G-Unit aren’t done. Just days later, they filed an appeal, asking a higher court to step in and review, and potentially overturn, the ruling. At the center of the fight is an alleged 2007 deal where Tompkins supposedly “irrevocably and exclusively” sold 50 the rights to her life story, agreeing she “would not publicly disclose, exploit, or otherwise commercialize any aspect of her life story or related rights.” Tompkins, however, claims she was pressured into signing it. 50 later sued her for $1 million, accusing her of breaking the agreement by sharing stories about him online.
