Rihanna’s Home Sh**ting Suspect May Be Mentally Unfit For Trial, Attorney Claims During Tense Hearing
Concerns surrounding the mental health of the woman accused of opening fire at Rihanna’s Los Angeles home took center stage during a tense court hearing on Wednesday.
According to court proceedings, 35-year-old Florida speech pathologist Ivanna Ortiz may be mentally unfit to stand trial after her attorney raised doubts about her competency in the high-profile case. Ortiz is facing charges of attempted m*rder and a$$ault with a d*adly weapon after prosecutors say she fired multiple rounds at Rihanna’s Beverly Crest property on March 8 while the singer and her husband, A$AP Rocky, were inside with their family.
Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman “expressed a doubt” about Ortiz’s competency, prompting Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Shannon Cooley to temporarily clear the courtroom for a private discussion regarding the defendant’s mental health concerns. However, after the closed-door hearing, the judge ruled there was not enough substantial evidence to halt the criminal proceedings.
The courtroom exchanges reportedly became heated as Ortiz argued with her attorney over scheduling matters and previously attempted to have him removed from the case. L.A. County Deputy Dist. Atty. Alexander Bott admitted he had “never seen anything like what happened on Wednesday.”
Authorities said Ortiz allegedly struck Rihanna’s home, a neighboring property, and an Airstream trailer with g*nfire. No injuries were reported.
Following her arrest, Ortiz briefly told investigators, “I would like to say that I wasn’t attempting m*rder. But that’s all I wanted to say.”
