Michael Jackson’s Former Bodyguard Says De@th Threats Forced Secret Late-Night Escapes With His Kids
#MichaelJackson’s head of security from 2006 until the singer’s de@th in 2009, is offering a rare and sobering look at what life was really like behind the scenes for the King of Pop.
Speaking in a new interview with The Art of Dialogue, Bill Whitfield — who later co-authored the book Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days — described de@th threats and threatening letters as a routine part of the job. When such threats arrived at hotel front desks, Whitfield said he would make the call to quietly pull everyone out without warning, relocating Michael and his three children in the middle of the night. The kids, he noted, never knew the real reason for the sudden moves. “His concern for his kids was to keep all the craziness away from them and trying to have a normal life with them,” Whitfield explained.
______________
He also spoke candidly about the toll the child abu$e allegations took on MJ personally. He recalled moments in public where voices in the crowd would scream accusations while others shouted words of support, and said Michael would quietly ask his team afterward if they had heard anything cruel. Whitfield admitted they would deny it, knowing the truth would send him spiraling. “I think it crushed him,” he said, describing the allegations as the beginning of what he believes was the singer’s emotional unraveling. He also claimed Michael privately insisted on his innocence and expressed regret over settling the 1993 civil case involving Jordan Chandler, saying he had wanted to fight it in court but was advised otherwise.
______________
The remarks come amid a wave of renewed attention on Michael’s life and legacy, fueled by the record-breaking biopic and the release of the documentary series Michael Jackson: The Verdict. Despite the celebrations surrounding both projects, Whitfield said he has little interest in joining in. Explaining why, he shared, “It’s hard for me to celebrate it because it just makes me wonder where was all these people when we was on the road traveling and where was the support for him at that time.”
