Senator Lindsey Graham Dies At 71 After Sudden Illness
Longtime South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71 following what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.” The announcement was made late Saturday evening through an official statement shared on the senator’s social media accounts.
Graham served as South Carolina’s senior U.S. senator for more than two decades after first being elected to the Senate in 2002. Before that, he represented South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and also served in the Air Force as a military lawyer, eventually retiring with the rank of colonel.
Throughout his political career, Graham became one of the Republican Party’s most recognizable figures, particularly on issues involving foreign policy, national security and judicial appointments. While he was initially one of Donald Trump’s harshest Republican critics during the 2016 presidential campaign, the two later developed a close political alliance that lasted throughout Trump’s presidency and beyond.
Following news of his passing, tributes from lawmakers and political leaders quickly poured in. President Donald Trump remembered Graham as “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known,” while Senate colleagues praised his decades of public service and commitment to the country.
Graham had recently turned 71 on July 9 and was actively campaigning for another term in the Senate at the time of his death. His family has asked for privacy as funeral arrangements are made and they mourn the loss of the veteran lawmaker. We send condolences to his family and friends.
