Kwanza Jones Makes MLB History As First Black Majority Owner, Takes Over San Diego Padres w/ Husband José E. Feliciano In Record $3.9 Billion Deal

Entrepreneur Kwanza Jones is making history as the first Black majority owner in Major League Baseball.

Jones and her husband, billionaire investor José E. Feliciano, are the new majority owners of the San Diego Padres following a record $3.9 billion sale. The couple jointly leads the ownership group, while Feliciano serves as the Padres’ designated control person. Their group reportedly owns more than 40% of the franchise.

Jones is a Princeton graduate, entrepreneur, investor and former Division I athlete who also has deep ties to Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater. Her late father had a law office and employment agency near the Apollo and introduced her to the venue as a child. Jones later won Amateur Night at the Apollo and eventually joined its Board of Directors.

Jones and Feliciano have also made major philanthropic investments, including a $20 million gift to Princeton University. Now, the couple is focused on bringing San Diego its first World Series championship, with Feliciano declaring: “We need to win the World Series. It’s that simple.”
