Former Video Vixen Gloria Velez Responds To Question About Where Video Vixens ‘Go’ After Fame

Gloria Velez is weighing in after It Is What It Is co-host Treasure “Stat Baby” Wilson questioned what happened to video vixens from an earlier era of hip-hop.

During a conversation on the sports talk show, which is hosted by Cam’ron, Ma$e and Wilson, Treasure wondered where many of the women went after their time appearing in music videos. She asked, “Where did they go? What happened to, like, most of those video vixens back in the days?” The conversation also included a reference to the women returning to “general population.”

Velez, who rose to prominence as a model and video vixen during the late ’90s and 2000s, responded on social media, writing, “Meanwhile, decades later… the video vixens are minding their business, living full lives, raising families, building businesses and evolving, yet somehow we’re STILL the conversation.” She added, “Maybe the real question isn’t, ‘What happened to the video vixens?’ Maybe it’s… why are y’all still so obsessed with us?”

Velez expanded on her thoughts in a video response, saying, “What exactly is wrong with general population? We were never aliens, inmates, or some separate species. We were women working in entertainment, then we grew up, we evolved.” She continued, “We became mothers, wives, business owners, authors, artists, caregivers, women living real lives.”

She also challenged the idea that stepping away from the spotlight means someone’s life or success ended, adding, “Just because you don’t see someone on TV anymore doesn’t mean their life stopped.” In her Instagram caption, Velez left followers with another question: “Why do people have such a hard time allowing women from that era to grow beyond the image they first knew us for?”
