Summer Walker Faces $50 Million Lawsuit From Interscope Records After Attempting To Exit Record Deal

R&B singer Summer Walker is facing a major legal battle with Interscope Records after attempting to terminate her recording contract.

According to Rolling Stone, Interscope filed a lawsuit on Friday (Oct. 9), claiming Walker could owe more than $50 million in damages if she walks away from her agreement. The label alleges she still owes two studio albums and an EP under a deal she initially signed in 2017.

Walker reportedly notified the label in August that she intended to terminate her contract, citing California’s seven-year rule, which generally limits personal-service agreements to seven years. However, Interscope argues that Walker has not fulfilled her contractual obligations and that her departure would result in significant financial losses.

The lawsuit also brings renewed attention to Walker’s original recording agreement. According to Rolling Stone, her deal included an initial $110,000 advance and a 16% royalty rate on her first two albums, with royalties subject to recoupment of advances and other expenses. Music industry experts previously criticized the contract’s restrictive terms.

Despite the lawsuit, Interscope says it hopes to reach an amicable resolution and remains open to continuing its relationship with the singer. Walker’s attorney has reportedly indicated that she intends to fight the claims.
