[UPDATED] George Zimmerman Taken Into Custody After Allegedly Attacking Wife’s Father

We’ve tried to keep the George Zimmerman coverage to a minimum since the acquittal, but recent negative reports about the 29-year-old have some of us scratching our heads. Last week, Shellie Zimmerman (George’s wife) filed for divorce, saying she and her husband had separated a month after he was acquitted of any crime for fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. And if that’s not enough negative press for him, Monday afternoon more unflattering news hit. According to the Associate Press, George and his wife are accusing each other of being the aggressor in a conflict that sent police officers to her father’s house. Here’s what allegedly happened. A fight went down between George and Shellie’s father. Shellie says on a 911 call that her estranged husband punched her father in the nose, grabbed an iPad out of her hand and smashed it and threatened them both with a gun. She also says on the call that he had his hand on his gun while he was in his car. His estranged wife also says that he threatened her with a gun. Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell commented saying:

We’ve only heard one side of the story so far.

A fire department ambulance arrived at the house but nobody needed to be transported, said Officer Zach Hudson, a spokesman for the Lake Mary Police Department. According to CBS news, George has been taken into custody. Story developing. UPDATED: 10:26 p.m. P.S.T.

Shellie initially told a 911 dispatcher that her husband had his hand on his gun as he sat in his car outside the home she was at with her father. She said she was scared because she wasn’t sure what the 29-year-old Zimmerman was capable of doing. Hours later she changed her story and said she never saw a firearm, said Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell. Lake Mary police spokesman Zach Hudson said late Monday night:

We didn’t find a gun. We didn’t find anything that indicated he had a gun on his person.

Hudson said Zimmerman was released from investigative detention at around 6:30 p.m. and “he just walked back into the house.”  Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, said his client never threatened his estranged wife and her father with a gun and never punched his father-in-law. Emotions got out of control, O’Mara said, but neither side is filing charges against the other:

I know the 911 tape suggests that Shellie was saying something but I think that was heightened emotions. There may have been some pushing and touching. That happens a lot in divorce situations … Nobody was injured.
