Kelly Price Says She Hasn’t Earn The Title ‘Diva’ + How She Was Semi-Discovered By Mariah Carey
She may have said goodbye to reality TV, but music is definitely her home. Recently, Kelly Price chatted with This Is 50’s Young Jack Thriller. The 41-year-old soulful singer talks about referred to as a ‘diva’, refusing to use the term ‘secular’ with her music and her relationships with R.Kelly and Mariah Carey. Check out a few excerpts.
On who is Kelly Price:
I am a song writer, I’m a wife, I’m a mother, a friend. I’m a great listener, counselor when I need to be, I’m a church girl, I’m a girl that loves to have fun, I’m a lot of things.
On starting off doing gospel and going ‘secular’:
I don’t call it secular, I call it music. I don’t like the word secular because the raw definition of secular means without God and I take God with me everywhere I go, I’ll never allow anybody to tell me that I’m without God. He’s here right now…he’s here cuz’ I’m here, he’s here cuz’ you are here.
On if she’d like to play Dorothy from The Wiz:
I would love to do it. I’ll be honest with you I wouldn’t mind being Dorothy, I wouldn’t mind be Evilene. Evilene was dope. She had it going on…she was evil but she had it going on and she sang her face off, shout out to Mable King…Don’t bring me no bad news, aint’ nobody got time for that.
On The Cast Of ‘The Wiz’:
Great cast, great music, classic African American swag music, just talent.
On meeting Diana Ross:
I met Diana Ross once actually when I was on the road with Mariah Carey as a background singer. We did a show with her overseas actually, and she’s sweet, gracious, and she’s Ms. Ross…Don’t try Diana, but you know what, she’s earned that. I’m not mad at her at all.
On not liking the term ‘Diva’:
It depends on who’s speaking it. Some people speak it and they speak to try and hurt you
