Raven Symoné: I Never Said I Wasn’t Black!
Raven Symoné is catching some heavy criticism about recent comments she made about the labeling of her race. During a recent segment with Oprah Winfrey on Where Are They Now?, Raven shared her true feelings about what she identifies as her race. She told Oprah:
I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American. I’m not an African-American. I’m an American.
She later added:
What I really mean by that is I’m an American. That’s what I really mean. I have darker skin. I have a

I get what she’s saying. I personally do not like the term African-American. I was born in America as was my mother, her mother and her mother and same on my dad’s side. Beyond that, I can’t trace too many roots, so it doesn’t matter. Black yes, but that’s race. American is not a race.
wait…black is a race? At the end of the day we are traced back to Africa. Just because some of us have had our history erased doesn’t make that less so. Call yourself what you want. My qualms are as follows-her arguments for wanting to be called so were garbage! “i have a good grade of hair” and something to the affect of getting along with white people?!? Thats where she lost me. And then white people jump on the bandwagon. “yes,thats what I’ve been saying Raven! Why do your people separate themselves.Thats why they’re discriminated against…”
If she’s going to use her platform, use it for something more than telling why you aren’t African American. What is that doing for the people?not a (bleep) thang!
