Boxing great, Muhammad Ali has passed away at age 74. Ali entered a Phoenix area hospital on Thursday for respiratory complications, with his family flying in from around the country to be at his side. A family spokesman stated,
“After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening,” Gunnell said in a statement. “The Ali family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support and asks for privacy at this time.”
Ali was diagnosed with the disease in 1984, just three years after retiring from boxing. Don King, who promoted some of Ali’s biggest fights such as “The Rumble In The Jungle” and “Thrilla In Manila” stated,
“It’s a sad day for life, man. I loved Muhammad Ali, he was my friend. Ali will never die,” Don King, who promoted some of Ali’s biggest fights, told The Associated Press early Saturday. “Like Martin Luther King his spirit will live on, he stood for the world.”
Muhammed finished his career with a 56-5 including 37 knockouts beating opponents such as Sonny Liston, George Foreman and Joe Frazier. He was the first person to win the heavyweight title three times. He will be buried in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky where the city will also hold a memorial service.
Since the announcement of his death, condolences from celebrities have poured in on social media.
