Ava DuVernay Adapting Octavia Butler’s Novel For TV
Octavia E. Butler’s Dawn is heading to the small screen. Reportedly, the classic 1987 science fiction novel has been picked up by Ava DuVernay, Charles D. King’s Macro and director-writer Victoria Mahoney for adaption into a television series.
Mahoney will pen the series about an African-American woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war. King and DuVernay will executive produce the Dawn series.
Butler was a science fiction writer. A multiple recipient of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, in 1995 she became the first science fiction writer to receive the MacArthur Fellowship, nicknamed the “Genius Grant”.
Ava shared her excitement about the project writing on Twitter:
Honored to partner with my friend @VictoriaMahoney + good brother @IAmCharlesDKing to bring legend Octavia Butler’s stellar work to screen!
