Michael K. Williams Will NOT Appear In New ‘Star Wars’ Movie, Role Cut
Michael K. Williams Will NOT Appear In New ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Michael K. Williams will not appear on the new Star Wars stand-alone Han Solo movie. Reportedly, the actor’s part has been cut due to the reshoots now underway with new director Ron Howard. The revised production schedule conflicted with his commitment to The Red Sea Diving Resort, a new movie that he’s currently shooting in South Africa. Williams was originally cast while Phil Lord and Chris Miller were helming the project. They have since left. Williams says about his departure,
I felt great about what I created with the directors that I worked with. When Ron Howard got hired to finish out the film, there were some reshoot issues that needed to be done in regards to my character, in order for it to match the new direction which the producers wanted Ron to carry the film in. And that would have required me on a plane a month ago to London, to Pinewood, to do reshoots. But I’m here, on location in Africa. It’s scheduling. I’m not going to be back on the market until the end of November after [his SundanceTV series] Hap and Leonard, and for them to wait that long for me, that would have pushed back the release date, which I believe is in May 2018. They wanted me now; I couldn’t go. So they had to clip-clip-clip.
He continues,
I don’t think that me not being in the Star Wars family is final. I left with a very good taste in my mouth about the whole family, and I hope that I left a good taste in their mouth. They’re a great group of people, the Lucas family.
The film reportedly co-stars: Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke. The untitled Han Solo movie hits theaters May 25, 2018. Williams is best known for his portrayal of Omar Little on the HBO drama series The Wire and Albert “Chalky” White on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. He was also acclaimed for his role as Jack Gee, husband of Bessie Smith, in the HBO telefilm biopic, Bessie. He has acted in supporting roles in a number of films and television shows, including The Road, Inherent Vice, The Night Of, Gone Baby Gone, and 12 Years a Slave.
