Taraji P. Henson To Produce and Star In Emmett Till Biopic, John Singleton To Direct
Taraji P. Henson To Produce & Star In Emmett Till Biopic
An Emmett Till biopic is underway. During an interview with Global Grind, Taraji P. Henson confirmed that she’s producing and starring in the project. The Empire’s star TPH Productions studio would be producing the biopic, while John Singleton will reportedly direct.
Emmett was a 14-year-old African-American who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after a white woman said she was offended by him in her family’s grocery store. The brutality of his murder and the fact that his killers were acquitted drew attention to the long history of violent persecution of African Americans in the United States. Till posthumously became an icon of the Civil Rights Movement.
Emmett’s mother, Mamie Till Bradley, insisted that photos of her son’s disfigured body be published, and served to galvanize the civil-rights movement. Taraji will reportedly play Mamie in the biopic.
No further details about the project have been confirmed. Taraji’s currently promoting her new movie, Proud Mary, which hits theaters Friday. In 2018, she is slated to star in three other films. In March, she will star in the film Tyler Perry’s Acrimony as a faithful wife who, after growing tired of standing by her devious husband, gets enraged when it becomes clear she has been betrayed. In November, Henson will voice a character by the name of Yesss in Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. Also in 2018, Henson will star in the historical-drama The Best of Enemies, portraying civil rights activist Ann Atwater.

Her line up of work sounds interesting. Can’t wait to see the Emmett Till Story!
That Emmett Till story has always saddened me. I am especially angered that the white woman confessed prior to her death he never whistled at her.
I recently saw his exhibit at the African American Museum in DC. It was very tasteful and moving. My kids did not know who he was. It was a good educational lesson.
If John Singleton and Taraji are doing this movie it will definitely be a good body of work.
