Serena Williams Gets Emotional After Wimbledon Loss – I Was Playing For All The Moms Out There
Serena Williams is arguably the greatest living athlete, both physically and otherwise. The tennis star took a tough loss to Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon finals over the weekend, but the graceful manner in which she delivered her runner-up speech made her the tournament’s real winner. She told a reporter after her loss:
It was such an amazing tournament for me. I was really hoping to get this far. It’s obviously disappointing, but I can’t be disappointed. I have so much to look forward to. I’m literally just getting started.
Fighting back tears, Serena went on to say,
To all the moms out there, I was playing for you today and I tried.
Serena left everyone emotional, including her bestie, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle.
However, Serena’s husband had nothing but beautiful words of encouragement for his wife. He wrote on social media:
Days after our baby girl was born, I kissed my wife goodbye before surgery and neither of us knew if she would be coming back. We just wanted her to survive—10 months later, she’s in the Wimbledon final. Congratulations, Angelique Kerber. Serena Williams will be holding a trophy again soon—she’s got the greatest one waiting at home for her. Our family knows she’ll win many more trophies, too. She’s just getting started. And I couldn’t be more proud.
It’s a beautiful thing having a great man by your side. Congrats to Serena!
