Michael Jackson – Sony Denies Claims That They Admitted To Selling Fake Music From Late Singer
Back in 2014, a fan named Vera Serova filed a class action suit in Los Angeles Superior Court against Michael Jackson’s friend Eddie Cascio and his production company, Angelikson Productions LLC over the songs “Monster,” “Keep Your Head Up” and “Breaking News” which appeared on Michael Jackson’s posthumous album, Michael in 2010. According to the suit, Serova questioned the validity of these tracks and implied that they were not sung by MJ. Take a listen for yourself.
Serova hired an audio expert to evaluate the tracks. The forensic audiologist determined in his report that the songs were very likely to have not been recorded by the King of Pop.
Serova’s suit claims that these songs were recorded by impersonator named Jason Malachi.
In court, Sony attempted to shift blame to Cascio and his co-defendant by saying,
“I think what he is saying here is. ‘We were as duped as the Plaintiffs… We didn’t know you guys were recording stuff in a basement that wasn’t recorded by Michael. You told us it was Michael. We believed it was Michael. And if there is a bad guy here, who was engaging in false commercial speech, it’s not us.’”
Many took this as an admission that they knew the songs were fake. However, Zia Modabber, a lawyer representing both Sony and the Jackson estate, says that her client’s words were misconstrued by the public.
“No one has conceded that Michael Jackson did not sing on the songs. The hearing Tuesday was about whether the First Amendment protects Sony Music and the Estate and there has been no ruling on the issue of whose voice is on the recordings.”
Do these tracks sound like Michael Jackson to you?
