Gabrielle Union : I don’t want a job I’m only getting because they screwed over the next woman!

Recently, Ellen Pompeo sat next to Gabrielle Union-Wade, Emma Roberts, and Gina Rodriguez as they delved into the difficulties women in Hollywood face. As Pompeo shared her experience with attempting to set boundaries around diversity, Union-Wade made light of a moment when she made an actress was paid what she was worth.

Earlier this summer there was a job I thought a friend had everybody knew she had that offer, and there was a low-ball attempt. And they were like, ‘We’re going to move on.’ She was like, ‘Bet. Move on.’ And they move on to me, but that’s my girl. So I was like, ‘What you turn down?’ So, I ask for, moon stars, rainbow, over [the] top of that. I have no intentions on doing it, I want her to get her money. It’s not my job, so I lose nothing. It was never my job to begin with, but I’m going to make sure she gets paid.

She continued,

After I pass, we tell the next person – ‘cause we know who the next person on the listis, ‘ask for this.’ And then the next person, they go down four people, end up paying more than what she turned down, but none of us lost a thing. If we’re all in this together, I lose nothing by making sure you get your money. I don’t want a job I’m only getting because they screwed over the next woman. Keep it. I don’t want to be on that set.

It’s not only communication. It’s compassion; it’s courage; it’s strength. It takes a lot of there things to not be that thirst trap, ‘I don’t care. I want it, no matter what, I’m not going to call my girls and ask them.’ That takes stepping up to be the best version of yourself, your higher self.

The women sat together for Porter Magazine’s Women In Television issue; during the sit down, Pompeo also discussed why she believes it’s Caucasian’s people sole responsibility to embrace diversity.
