Issa Rae Inks Multi-Picture Deal W/ Columbia Pictures To Give Opportunities To Diverse Writers

Not only is Issa Rae the creator and co-writer of HBO’s hit show “Insecure,” but she is also the one of the leading women changing the face of film and television in Hollywood. The actress and her production company ColorCreative recently inked a multi-picture production deal with Columbia Pictures to discover, embrace, and bestow emerging diverse screenwriters. Rae stated about the deal,

Working with Bryan Smiley and Columbia Pictures to further the mission ColorCreative set out to achieve four years ago in creating access for underrepresented writers, has been a dream come true. All of the projects we are working on are fresh and promising and we can’t wait to continue the work. We hope to set a precedent and inspire the industry at large to invest in undiscovered talent, original IP, and fresh stories and perspectives.

Bryan Smiley, Vice President of production at Columbia, guided the deal and will oversee production and development alongside ColorCreative for the motion picture group.

ColorCreative is an organization founded in 2015 which aims to raise awareness for writers who come from diverse backgrounds while providing a solid foundation for their careers to be catapulted by selling their work to digital, network, and cable platforms.

Selected participants of Rae’s initiative will be announced in Spring 2019 and will be working with Rae and the studio to create and write features on the foundation of their original ideas.
