Sybrina Fulton, Mother Of Trayvon Martin, Running For Office: It Took My Son Being Shot Down For Me To Stand Up
Trayvon Martin’s mother could take her impact to another level! Sybrina Fulton, who has been making strides against gun violence and other issues, announced she’s running for Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sunday.
Fulton has been a voice ever since her son, Martin, was shot and killed in February 2012. He was 17-years-old. His tragic murder, along with unfortunate similar incidents, sparked a wave of stances against gun violence, especially in the Black community. Fulton is looking to make even more strides in a political capacity.
She wrote in her statement,
“My time as a public servant began 30 years ago at Miami-Dade County. Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our communities and make them safer. But the work is not done. I am proud to announce that I will run to represent District 1 on the county commission.”

She followed it up with a video. Fulton said,
“At first I didn’t want to be the voice for Trayvon after he did. But I decided, I have no choice. Now I’m called to act and called to serve. It became clear to me there’s an opportunity to turn our family’s tragedy into something positive for many other families.”

“It took my son being shot down in order for me to stand up. And I’m standing up. That’s why I’ve decided to run and serve. I worked my way up in county government for 24 years. In our non-profit work, we’ve helped grieving mothers whose children were violently murdered around the country. For our future, we need new, positive action on public safety and gun violence, on affordable housing and the cost of living. We must do everything possible to improve the quality of life for everyday people. These issues are pressing.”
She ended her message with,
“Until recently, I didn’t see myself as someone who would run. If not me, then who? If not now, then when? Some only know me as Trayvon Martin’s mom. Hi, I’m Sybrina Fulton, and I’m running for Miami-Dade County Commisser.”
