Mathew Knowles’ Wife Gena Avery Says Pressure Of Being In The Spotlight Was ‘Difficult’

It’s not often we hear from Mathew Knowles’ wife, Gena Avery. In fact, some didn’t know he was even married again. The two tied the knot in July 2013, shortly after his divorce with Tina Lawson, and his love life has kind of been under wraps since then.

But now, Avery has sat down for her first-ever television interview since becoming Mrs. Knowles, which also makes her stepmom to Beyonce and Solange.

While on the Tamron Hall Show, she opened up about the pressure she’s felt to be a public figure after marrying into the famous family.

“It was difficult. Just the pressure of being in the spotlight. I like to be behind-the-scenes. I’m not on any social media, no Facebook, Instagram, nothing.”

Knowles added that he was confident Avery could handle it.

“We don’t care about people are saying. As long as we now can impact other’s lives in a positive way, that’s what’s important. At the end of the day it will be just Gena and I in a room.”

Avery also shared how she coped with Knowles’s recent battle with breast cancer after losing her sister to the same disease.

“It was devastating. I was so tender and raw because my sister passed away from breast cancer four months prior. So, it’s still very hard. She died January of this year and she was diagnosed 13 months prior. So she declined rapidly. Yes I was very, very concerned. I had to be very strong for him. And I knew he was very concerned about me. But we just had to do it together, and we had to do it fast.”

Knowles also pointed out that Avery’s mom is a breast cancer survivor.

Destiny’s Child

As for the ongoing push of a Destiny’s Child reunion with Beyonce, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland, Knowles said that he has an “impact” on whether it happens as he’s still their official manager. He joked,

“First thing I’m gonna do is replace Michelle with Gena.”

He then added that in the meantime, fans will get a musical.

“I always say that it would take two years just in preparation. That’s really up to the ladies to have the first decision if they want to do that.

Destiny’s Child

I think it’s time for the musical that we’re doing in February. It’s my story. You know this journey started in 1993… This is about this long journey that these ladies went through and a lot of other people.”
