Barack Obama On Cancel Culture: If All You’re Doing Is Casting Stones, You’re Probably Not Gonna Get That Far’

The cancel culture didn’t necessarily exist when President Barack Obama was in office. But he’s had an eye on it and said recently he’s not a fan.

During a panel for the Obama Foundation Summit, the former President spoke on the trend of “canceling” someone when they do something the majority of the culture doesn’t approve of.

“The idea of purity and you’re never compromised, and you’re always politically woke and all that stuff, you should get over that quickly. The world is messy. They’re ambiguous. People who do really good stuff have flaws. People who you are fighting may love their kids, and share certain things with you.”

He added that social media hasn’t helped and that some use the tool to call someone out to make themselves feel more “woke” on certain issues.

“I think, one danger I see, particularly on college campuses… I do get a sense sometimes now among some young people, and this is accelerated by social media… The way of me making change is to be as judgmental as possible about other people. And that’s enough. If I tweet or hashtag about you didn’t do something right or used the wrong verb, then I can sit back and feel pretty good about myself cause ‘Man you see how woke I was, I called you out.’ That’s not activism. That’s not bringing about change. If all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not gonna get that far.”

Obama seemed to think the summit went well after giving viewers the much needed talking to.
