BET Founder Bob Johnson On Democrats Who Are Running Against Donald Trump: I Don’t Think That Group Is Capable Of Beating Him
While there are currently 18 Democrats running against President Donald Trump for the upcoming election, Bob Johnson, the founder of BET and America’s first Black billionaire, doesn’t have faith in any of them.
He said in an interview with CNBC Friday (Nov. 29),
“If you take a snapshot today, I don’t think that group is capable of beating Trump despite what the polls say.”
Interestingly enough, a recent poll from ABC News and the Washington Post proved that five Democratic candidates (former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana) are ahead of Donald Trump by between 9 and 17 percentage points.
He added,
“I think the president has always been in a position where it’s his to lose based on his bringing a sort of disruptive force into what would be called political norms.”
He went on to say that Donald Trump “dominates the news cycle,” which is another reason Bob Johnson said he believes Trump has the advantage.
Bob Johnson, who has a longtime democrat, shared these comments about Trump months after he saluted the President for boosting the economy. He said in July,
“I think the economy is doing great, and it’s reaching populations that heretofore had very bad problems in terms of jobs and employment and the opportunities that come with employment … so African-American unemployment is at its lowest level. ”
“I give the president a lot of credit for moving the economy in a positive direction that’s benefiting a large amount of Americans. I think the tax cuts clearly helped stimulate the economy. I think business people have more confidence in the way the economy is going….overall, if you look at the U.S. economy … you got to give the president an A+ for that.”
Still, he also said back then that he didn’t have a specific candidate he was rooting for, stating that Democrats have moved too far to the left.
“For that reason, I don’t have a particular candidate (I’m supporting) in the party at this time. I think at the end of the day, if a Democrat is going to beat Trump, then that person, he or she, will have to move to the center and you can’t wait too long to do that.”
