Orlando Jones Reveals He Was Fired From ‘American Gods’, Says New Showrunner Thought His Character Sent ‘The Wrong Message To Black America’

American Gods viewers have seen the last of Mr. Nancy.

Orlando Jones took on the role in the STARZ series that tells the story of a man who is grieving the loss of his late wife, and meets a conman who offers him the job of a bodyguard.

But now, he has called out the new showrunner, Charles Eglee, who is the third showrunner the series has seen, in a Twitter video Saturday (Dec. 14).

“September 10, 2018, I was fired from ‘American Gods’, there will be no more Mr. NancyDon’t let these motherf***ers tell you they love Mr. Nancy, they don’t. I’m not gonna name names but the new season 3 showrunner is a Connecticut boy, Yale-educated, so he’s very smart. He thinks Mr. Nancy’s angry, get s*** done, is the wrong message for Black America. That’s right, this White man sits in that decision-making chair and I’m sure he has many Black BFFs that are his advisors and made it clear to him that if they did not get rid of that angry god he’d start a Denmark D.C. uprising in this country. I mean, what else could it be?”

Orlando Jones continued and thanked Neil Gaiman, the author who penned the American Gods 2001 novel, which later served as inspiration for the show.

“To the wonder Neil Gaiman, thank you for allowing me to play this role, for writing this wonderful book, for opening the door for me to become a writer/producer for season 2 of American Gods.”

He also thanked Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, who created the series and were executive producers/showrunners in the premiere season, but later left because of budget and creative issues.
