Deontay Wilder Rematch With Tyson Fury Postponed Until Late 2020

As previously reported, Fury out-landed Wilder in their February rematch, 82-34 in total punches and out-threw the Alabama-native 267-141. For Wilder, it was his first loss and now has a record of 42-1-1 with 41 knockouts. Wilder says before the match started he knew there was a problem with his legs. He says after their epic showdown in February,

“My uniform was way too heavy. It was 40-plus pounds. We had it on 10 or 15 minutes before we even walked out and then put the helmet on. That was extra weight, then the ring walk, then going up the stairs. It was like a real workout for my legs. When I took it off, I knew immediately that game has changed.”

He also said,

“He didn’t hurt me at all, but the simple fact is … that my uniform was way too heavy for me. I didn’t have no legs from the beginning of the fight. In the third round, my legs were just shot all the way through. But I’m a warrior and people know that I’m a warrior. It could easily be told that I didn’t have legs or anything. A lot of people were telling me, ‘It looked like something was wrong with you.’ Something was, but when you’re in the ring, you have to bluff a lot of things. I tried my best to do so. I knew I didn’t have the legs because of my uniform.

Since his disappointing loss, Wilder has taken a low profile, but the former WBC champion appeared on “The Premier Boxing Champions Podcast” this week with Kenneth Bouharie and Michael Rosenthal and reiterated that there was never a doubt he’d take the third match.

“Why [would] I not want [the rematch]? You know, like I said, at this moment in time, you know, we’re just sitting back. It’s gonna be a time and place where I’m ready to come out. It’s gonna be a time and place where I say what I need to say.”

He adds,

“You know, but looking at the fight, he knows that wasn’t me. I know that wasn’t me and the people in boxing, everyone knows that wasn’t the real Deontay Wilder. Something was wrong with him, and you know, we will show. Like I said, there’s a time and place for it all, and I’ll reveal a lot of things.”

The two fighters first met in Dec. 2018, with the fight resulting in a draw. That was a controversial result, as both fighters felt they were victorious.
