R. Kelly – Inmate Who Attacked Singer Claims Prison Personnel Told Him To Do It
The inmate who attacked R. Kelly behind bars is pleading his case.
It was previously reported that R. Kelly was attacked while serving time at Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center. A fellow inmate was reportedly upset over the number of lockdowns in the jail because of R. Kelly supporters protesting for his release outside. The attacker reportedly tried to stab R. Kelly with a pen before he was pulled off of him.
Now, Jeremiah Shane Farmer has taken responsibility for the attack in a handwritten, four-page document, complete with block lettering. He alleged that he’s a victim of government “corruption” and said the COVID-19 lockdown has deprived him of having a reliable attorney.
He wrote:
“Farmer, with no where else to turn for legal help, was forced to assault hip-hop R&B singer Robert Kelly in hopes of getting spotlight attention and world news notice to shed light on government corruption here in the Seventh Circuit.”
He added that an MCC “mental health professional” told him to attack R. Kelly.
R. Kelly’s legal team is reportedly using the letter as one of the many reasons he should get an early release, stating that he’s unsafe and at risk of contracting COVID-19. They released a new motion Friday (Sept. 4th), calling for him to be let go.
“According to Mr. Farmer’s filing, MCC personnel told him to ‘go do it then,’ referring to attacking Kelly. It appears that MCC personnel then followed Mr. Farmer, allowed him to carry out the attack on Mr. Kelly (in his jail cell) and then only intervened after Mr. Kelly sustained serious injuries.”
One of R. Kelly’s lawyers, Mike Leonard, also said:
“We are seeking a hearing in which we would get to examine Mr. Farmer under oath, as well as the personnel involved at the MCC Chicago. And ultimately seeking his release from custody – as this is yet another argument in favor of that.”
He added that the attack
“further illustrates the inability of the (Bureau of Prisons) to safely house Mr. Kelly and to allow him to prepare for trial.”
According to documents from the prison, Farmer was seen on top of R. Kelly in the lower bunk:
“punching Kelly repeatedly in the head and torso.”
Justin Long, a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons said in a statement:
“For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not comment on an individual inmate’s conditions of confinement or medical status.”
Farmer was indicted in 2018 for racketeering conspiracy and conspiracy to distribute drugs that led to a double homicide in 1999. The incident took place during the robbery of a Hammond, Indiana business. He was reportedly a Latin Kings street gang member.
R. Kelly is awaiting his trial for a variety of charges including child pornography.
