Olympic Gymnast Gabby Douglas Shows Off Her Natural Hair: I Had Bald Spots, Now Here I Am No Wigs, No Chemicals, All Me
Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas has opened up about her hair journey as she shows off her long, natural locks following her struggle.
Back in 2012, the All-Around Olympic champion’s ponytail was almost a bigger topic than her winning a gold medal and making history. The now 25-year-old gymnast received lots of backlash for her hairstyle as she competed for the title.

On Sept. 6, Gabby Douglas celebrated the results of her hair journey with an Instagram post, displaying the growth and length of her hair. In her caption, she writes:
“From the heart – from a very young age i always had to put my hair in a tight ponytail to do gymnastics and due to that my hair became completely damaged. I had bald spots on the back of my head.”
She continued, revealing that she felt embarrassed about her hair and used to try to hide her bald spots with clip-ins. She added,
“…but it was still noticeable. my hair grew a little, but shortly after, I had to cut all of my hair off because it was so damaged.”
She closes out her caption stating that while she was sad about it, she’s come a long way since then.
“I cried and cried and cried. most days i didn’t even want to go to the gym because i felt so embarrassed that all my hair was gone. i used to think: why can’t i have healthy hair? despite yet another challenge, i kept going. fast forward to the both olympics and my hair was the topic of conversation… now here i am today – no extensions – no clip-ins – no wigs – no chemicals – all me.”
