Additionally, yesterday (Tuesday, May 18th) marked the season finale for season two of Mixed-ish, a prequel spin-off to Black-ish. The episode was also the series finale as the show has been canceled and won’t return for a third season.
Craig Erwich, President, ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals spoke on Mixed-ish, as well as 50 Cent’s For Life series being canceled on the network. He told Deadline,
“They are all unique shows who on their own specific timeline where they are creatively and with the audience. I can say that just because we are not ordering new seasons does not take anything away from the impact that these shows had creatively or how many fans they have on ABC. These are difficult business decisions but we are really proud of the runs that all of these shows had.”
Still, Black-ish fans will be graced by an additional spin-off. The prospective new series, Brown-ish, would focus on a Latino family and is being developed by Kenya Barris and Eva Longoria.
Craig Erwich said:
“Brown-ish is still a concept that is in development, we haven’t rolled out the firm plans around that yet.”
He continued:
“When we talk about the world of black-ish, there are so many different iterations that we are open to; it’s really up to Kenya who is the master and the captain of the franchise.”
Brown-ish would be the third Black-ish spin-off, following Mixed-ish and Grown-ish. Additionally, there were reportedly plans in the works for an additional spin-off–Old-ish–last year. However, it appears that those plans fell through, as Craig Erwich stated:
“On old-ish, we have no current plans to make it as a pilot.”
So, it looks like Black-ish‘s legacy will continue to live on through Grown-ish as well as Brown-ish!
While there’s currently no word on when Brown-ish will begin production, the fourth season of Grown-ish is set to premiere on July 8, 2021.
