Howard University Officially Renames Fine Arts College After Chadwick Boseman
The prestigious Howard University has officially renamed its College Of Fine Arts center after the legendary actor, Chadwick Boseman. Today (Sept. 3), the HBCU’s official Instagram account posted the installation of the late actor’s name. The caption reads:
“Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts Installation
Yesterday, the letters were installed over the now official Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts. An icon in his own right who has left an immeasurable legacy for the next generation. Thank you Mr. Boseman.”

The special moment comes just a year after Chadwick Boseman’s untimely death on Aug. 28, 2020, after privately battling colon cancer for four years. The iconic actor graduated from Howard University in 2000, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in directing. As a proud alumnus, he returned to Howard University in 2018 to receive his honorary doctorate. Chadwick Boseman then delivered a viral speech during the school’s 150th commencement ceremony.
Howard University announced its decision to rename the College of Fine Arts center after Boseman in May 2021. Boseman’s family cherished thee honor and wrote in a statement:
“Chad fought to preserve the College of Fine Arts during his matriculation at Howard and remained dedicated to the fight throughout his career, and he would be overjoyed by this development. His time at Howard University helped shape both the man and the artist that he became, committed to truth, integrity and a determination to transform the world through the power of storytelling. We are confident that under the dynamic leadership of his former professor and mentor the indomitable Phylicia Rashad that the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts will inspire artistic scholars for many generations.”
Although Chadwick Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, he went on to star in some of Hollywood’s biggest films like Marshall (2017), Black Panther (2018), 21 Bridges (2019), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). He also appeared in two major films last year including Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom which earned the actor a posthumous Oscar nomination.
