Bevy Smith Questions Lack Of Black American Designers At Met Gala: This Is How You Can Tell All That Black Lives Matter Support Was Performative
While all eyes were on who wore what at The Met Gala Monday night (Sept. 13), fashion expert and TV personality Bevy Smith made it clear she wasn’t impressed.
She took to Twitter to call out the lack of Black designers at the high-fashion event.
The “Fashion Queens” host started by responding to a social media user who said the wardrobe choices were “underwhelming.” She wrote,
“Black people with access have become far too staid & safe we know how to do too much, be extravagant, but then it’s deemed ghetto until fashion “finds” it”
She added,
“And why no American Black designers, this is how you can tell that all that #BLM support was performative, if this was 2020 Black designers would have flooded the #MetGala carpet”

She went on to tweet that she supported Black designers in 2019.
“in 2019 I wore ALL BLACK DESIGNERS & now with all of these CFDA Black designer initiatives I’m confused as to why we don’t see more”

She also responded to a fan who said Black designers don’t need validation from the star-studded event, replying:
“We should be EVERYWHERE because fashion is a BUSINESS”

She told one tweeter who made a similar point about Black designers not needing approval from the Met Gala and wrote,
“Baby, this is a discussion about the Super Bowl of fashion, I hosted Fashion Bomb Daily fashion show, interviewed Misa Hylton on Saturday, attended Harlem Fashion Row, Harlem Fashion Week, LaQuan Smith, etc, we are shining in our spaces! We deserve to shine EVERYWHERE”
