Chris Brown & Drake Sued For Copyright Infringement, Plaintiffs Allege ‘No Guidance’ Was Largely Based Off An Earlier Song
Did Chris Brown and Drake commit copyright infringement?
Yesterday (Tuesday, Oct. 5th), reports circulated that Chris Brown and Drake had a new lawsuit on their hands. Specifically, the suit was over the artists’ 2019 collaboration, “No Guidance.”
The lawsuit was filed by Brandon Cooper and Timothy Valentine, who respectively go by the stage names Mr. Cooper and Drum’n Skillz. The plaintiffs claim that Chris Brown and Drake copied a song they had released three years prior, “I Love Your Dress.”
Brandon Cooper and Timothy Valentine say that an analysis of the beat, rhythmic structure, hook, and lyrics indicate that “No Guidance” is derived from “I Love Your Dress.” They also allege that similar repetition can be heard within both songs. In “I Love Your Dress,” the line “She got it; she got it” is repeated, while the lines “You got it, girl; you got it” is repeated throughout “No Guidance.” It is also worth noting that the plaintiffs say that another line in “No Guidance” with the term “flew the coop” was a passive dig at them, as it was allegedly a play on Brandon Cooper‘s supposed nickname, Coop.
Due to these alleged similarities, Brandon Cooper and Timothy Valentine are suing Chris Brown and Drake for copyright infringement. They are reportedly requesting a large sum, though the exact amount is unclear. Neither Chris Brown nor Drake have publicly acknowledged the suit.
It’s also worth noting that, aside from these allegations, “No Guidance” reportedly contains uncredited samples of a 2018 SoundCloud track–“Before I Die” by Che Ecru (real name Michee Lebrun).
