Janet Jackson’s Ex-Stylist Suggests Her Super Bowl Nip Slip Was Intentional: I Did What I Was Hired For – I Don’t Malfunction!

Janet Jackson’s Former Stylist Suggests Singer’s Super Bowl Nip Slip Was Intentional: I Did What I Was Hired For–I Don’t Malfunction!
Was Janet Jackson‘s Super Bowl controversy a planned stunt?
As pop culture fans will recall, Janet Jackson memorably found herself embroiled in controversy following the 2004 Super Bowl. During her halftime show performance alongside Justin Timberlake, the “Any Time, Any Place” singer’s breast became exposed and she suffered a “nip slip” on national television. The incident specifically appears to have been caused by Justin Timberlake accidentally ripping Janet Jackson‘s top at the end of the performance.
Now, almost 18 years after the “nipplegate” incident, the stylist who worked on Janet Jackson‘s Super Bowl outfit is speaking out about the situation. Wayne Scot Lukas recently dished on the controversy and suggested that, contrary to popular belief, the matter was not the result of a wardrobe malfunction. He initially stated:
“I was a work for hire. I was hired to do a job. I did exactly what I was supposed to do.”
Wayne Scot Lukas continued:
“If I work with someone who’s a dancer, you have to be able to dance in a wardrobe and it has to never fall apart. My job is to have snaps and pins and Velcro so that–even in her quick change–if she forgets to snap something back on, it stays on. That’s my job. I stand 100% by my story that I did exactly what I was supposed to do–what I was hired for. And if I ever hurt my friend, I wouldn’t have worked with Janet for six years after the Super Bowl. I would’ve been fired that day!”
The stylist then added:
“[Justin and I] haven’t spoken since he blamed me. [He] came off the stage and said ‘It’s just a little wardrobe malfunction’… Wardrobe malfunction? I don’t malfunction–I was a professional stylist. $10,000 a day back then, I can’t fail!”

He proceeded to allege that Super Bowl technical producers were supposed to “cut to black” to avoid Janet Jackson‘s breast being shown on TV:
“You were never supposed to see a movement where a breast was out… They were supposed to cut to black… Somebody didn’t push the button–somebody didn’t protect my friend!”

This news comes just days after a documentary on the incident premiered. This past Friday (Nov. 19th), Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson aired on Hulu, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the matter.
