JT Of ‘City Girls’ Shares How Federal Prison Sentence Helped Her Rap Career: It Gave Me More Edge
City Girls’ member JT is getting candid about how prison changed her life.
Jatavia Johnson, known professionally as JT, 29, started a two-year federal prison sentence back in 2018, at the start of a rising music career. The rapper was arrested and sentenced after being charged and found guilty of aggravated identity theft. While visiting Vic Mensa’s new Abolotix X podcast, JT spoke about the experience and shared how the jail stint affected her life and career in totality. She stated:
“I feel like I got better. Going to prison and coming out, gave me more edge, in my music when I rap and in my voice.”

She continued:
“It did put a lot of fear in me too. It put a lot of anxiety in me. It changed me completely.”
The City Girls released a documentary titled “Point Blank Period” shortly after JT’s arrest in 2018. In the doc, the artist takes responsibility for the actions that led to her arrest, claiming adamantly that she did what she had to do to survive. Later in the Abolition X interview, the Florida rapper recalled how being perceived as “rebellious” turned her down a troubled wayward path. She stated:
“My whole life, I have always been painted as a rebellious person, and to the point where I started to believe it,”
Then continued:
“If you always tell me that I’m the problem, I’m going to believe that I’m the problem, so now that I’m the problem, I’m going to be the problem.”

Since her release, JT has avoided further legal trouble and has continued to flourish in the music industry. Alongside her rap mate Yung Miami, 28, the duo has gone on to release several club bangers with notable features from artists such as Cardi B, Lil Baby, Doja Cat, and a recently released record with Fivio Foreign.
