Michael Che Says His Departure From ‘SNL’ Will Happen Sooner Than Later: I’ve Been Here Longer Than I Will Be Here
Looks like Michael Che’s comedic days on Saturday Night Live may come to an end soon.
The comedian addressed speculations that he was planning to leave the series, after making a joke about his exit from the show. Michael Che, 38, has been a staple member of the live sketch comedy program for the past eight years. While performing at a surprise SNL comedy set back in March, Michael Che reportedly told the crowd:
“This is my last year.”
To which some reporters took quite literally. The entertainer clarified that his statement was a joke at that moment, but recently admitted there is some truth behind the humor. In a recent interview, Michael stated:
“My head has been at leaving for the past five seasons….I do think that I’ve been here longer than I’ll be here.”
Michael continued, offering the explanation that his decision is based solely on him timing out as a fresh comic. He stated:
“This show is built for younger voices and, at some point, there’ll be something more exciting to watch at the halfway mark of the show than me and dumb Jost.”

According to reports, the popular New York comedy series will see quite a few cast changes following the end of the series 47th season, which will air later this month. However, SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels says if it was up to him, Michael would stay as long as desires. He stated:
“If I had my way, he’ll be here….And I don’t always get my way. But when you have someone who’s the real thing, you want to hold on as long as you can.”
