City Girls’ JT Addresses Critics Who Says The Rap Duo Makes ‘Bad Music’: It’s Not Conscious Rap, But I Could Definitely Do A Conscious Rap [VIDEO]
Hip hop duo City Girls are defending themselves after facing constant backlash for their music style.
Originating in 2017, City Girls is comprised of Miami, Florida natives Yung Miami, 28, and JT, 29. City Girls is a fun-bop duo that expresses themselves through genres of hip hop, Southern hip hop, and trap.
The Miami-based rap duo creates music that heavily relates to women getting what they want out of men, enjoying their freedom, and having a good time in the process. In turn, rap fans have often criticized the City Girls for their expression of music and that their music isn’t deep enough.

The City Girls
During a recent interview with Complex, the City Girls addressed the on-going debate about their music and their place in the hip hop industry as female rappers. In the clip, City Girls’ member/hip hop artist JT said that a lot of influence in pop culture today stemmed from the rap duo, but often times people forget their characteristics and label it as “bad music.” She said:
“I feel like a lot of times, people tend to forget and try to discredit us and say we make bad music. And I never, ever, ever feel like that. I feel like everything we put out is fun and is a bop. It’s not conscious rap, but I could definitely do a conscious rap. But I feel like our music is for freedom and fun and partying and to make women feel good and to pop they sh*t.”
JT added:
“So, a lot of people don’t say that it’s real Rap, but music is to express yourself.”
Despite the critics, many leading rappers in the game have given the group their props. City Girls rose to fame in 2018 with their uncredited guest appearance on “In My Feelings,” a summer viral hit released by rap icon Drake, 35.
