Mary J. Blige Says “I Don’t Wanna Be Cocky, But If I Wanted To I Could – I’ve Earned The Right” As She Reflects On Her Career [VIDEO]
Mary J. Blige, often referred to as the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,” has reached a point in her career where she doesn’t have to move with as much humbleness.
Mary J. Blige began her career in the music industry in 1991 when she was signed to Uptown Records. Mary J. Blige is credited for introducing the mix of R&B and hip hop into mainstream music, with the 51-year-old songstress releasing the first album by a singer to have a rapper featured on every song — popularizing rap as a featuring act.
In addition to making her mark in the music industry, the superstar has also made a successful transition to acting on both the television and movie screens. And now, singer/actress Mary J. Blige has been named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2022 for the outlet’s annual list.

While obtaining the coverage for the feature, Blige opened up about how she currently views herself within her career, emphasizing that the only opinion that matters is the way that you view yourself. She said:
“I don’t wanna be cocky, but if I wanted to I could — I’ve earned the right. I’m doing the work mentally, spiritually, physically, intellectually.”

The multi-Grammy-Award-winning artist added:
“What you say about you is more important than what other people say about you. What means something to me is speaking beauty of my life.”
As previously reported, Blige has struggled with feeling comfortable and confident in her own skin. According to Blige, she said that she didn’t feel or believe that she was beautiful until 2016.
In order to build herself up, she started complimenting herself in the mornings because that’s typically when you’re the realest version of yourself. To this day, her daily morning affirmations include telling herself:
“Good morning, Gorgeous. I love you. I got you. I need you.”
In December 2021, Blige released her single “Good Morning Gorgeous.” The track has garnered over 10 million views on YouTube, and is featured on the singer’s fourteenth studio album, “Good Morning Gorgeous.”
