Jim Jones & Maino Speak Out Against Gunna & Young Thug’s Music Being Used Against Them In Court: It Shouldn’t Be Taken Out Of Context As It Being So Literal

Jim Jones and Maino are not happy with law enforcement using song lyrics against rappers!

During a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, the two New York rappers touched on the recent arrest of Young Thug and Gunna and explained why they are against rappers song lyrics being used against them in the court of law. Maino said,

“When you rapping, you rapping from a perspective… I say all kind of crazy s**t sometimes when I rap.. I say yo, ‘woke up in the shade room, shorty took me home, I licked her p**y in her kids room.’ I never did it….It’s just a bar. It shouldn’t be literal.”

Maino continued,

“It shouldn’t be taken out of context as it being so literal. Some of these [lyrics] are just bars. We saying things that come from things we might have seen or just some ill s**t to say.” 

Jim Jones then chimed in and gave a list of examples showing actors and directors in Hollywood who have imitated crime and illegal activities, however, their work has been seen as art and has never been used against them. He explained,

“Quentin Tarantino hasn’t been locked up or put on trial for any of the movies he’s made yet. ‘Goodfellas’–none of them. Robert De Niro hasn’t been up on the stand for none of the killings he’s done in movies.”

As previously reported, last month, Young Thug and Gunna were arrested and accused of participating in street gang activity and conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Prosecutors reportedly submitted lyrics from Young Thug songs to be used during the trial.

This month music executives Julie Greenwald and Kevin Liles launched the Rap Music on Trial: Protect Black Art petition, which calls on politicians to ban rap lyrics from being presented as legal evidence against artists accused of crimes. In his pre-recorded message, Young Thug urged his fans to sign the petition.

“You know, this isn’t just about me or YSL, I always use my music as a form of artistic expression, and now I see that Black artists and rappers don’t have that, you know, freedom. Everybody please sign the ‘Protect Black Art’ petition and keep praying for us. I love you all.”
