Oprah Winfrey Throws Her Dad, Who Is Battling Cancer, A Surprise ‘Appreciation Day’ Barbeque: Giving My Father His Flowers While He’s Still Well Enough To Smell Them

Oprah Winfrey wanted to give her dad his ‘flowers’ while he’s still here.

On Monday (July 4) media mogul Oprah Winfrey, 68, put together a surprise gathering for her father, Vernon Winfrey, 88, who is suffering from cancer. Oprah Winfrey took to Instagram to post a video taken by her best friend, journalist Gayle King, of the celebration.

 Oprah says:

“So, we’ve been planning a backyard barbecue that’s actually more than a backyard barbecue, it’s for Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day.” 

Oprah continues:

“Because my father is ill and so we wanted to be able to have all of his friends come and celebrate him while he is able to receive the joy, so that’s what we’re doing receiving the joy.”

Oprah adds:

 “He doesn’t even know this is for him. He thinks it’s a fourth of July thing he doesn’t even know it’s for him.”

Oprah guides Gayle King around the party with the camera and points out the food spread, which included fried chicken, burgers and brisket, and more. Oprah acknowledges her father sitting in a barber chair. 

Oprah points to Vernon Winfrey and says:

“My dad’s a barber so we put him in the barber chair.”

The entertainer captions the video:

“Giving my father his “flowers” while he’s still well enough to smell them. Happy 4th of July as you gather with your family and friends. Remember to celebrate each other.”
