Comic Amber Ruffin Says Canceling Celebrities Isn’t Sticking, Except Maybe In The Case of Kanye West
Cancel culture is at an all-time high these days, and Amber Ruffin is opening up about how it impacts the industry she’s in.
The comedian and Late Night writer took to the red carpet at the Ebony Power 100 Gala, where she shared how canceling a star won’t necessarily have the effect that some might anticipate on their career. According to the comic, celebrities will sometime spark their own cancelation out of boredom, and in others, it’s brought on by a controversial issue.
Amber Ruffin elaborated,
“I think, most of the time, people get canceled because that is the consequences for their actions. And, you know, we’re saying cancel, but that’s not true.”

Based on her own experience, not everyone who is “canceled” genuinely remains that way — except maybe Kanye West. She cited Ye‘s recent antisemitic remarks, which have led to the termination of several business endorsements and also knocked him out of the billionaires club. In her opinion, his cancellation may be the only one that actually sticks.

As far as it goes for the comedy industry, she continued,
“A lot of those people that we canceled a minute ago, they’re [on] tour and sh*t. Louis C.K. is on tour, people are fine. These cancellations, these cancelings are not sticking. So I think people are experiencing consequences for their actions and then they’re moving on.”
Following Trevor Noah‘s departure from the Daily Show, Ruffin, who hosts Peacock’s late-night series The Amber Ruffin Show, may be stepping even further into comedy as his replacement — and she’s honored that fans even believe she’d be a good fit for the series.
