Miami Beach Placed Under Curfew Following Two Fatal Shootings
Miami Beach is under new regulations!
It’s Spring Break season and the City of Miami Beach is one of those hot spot destinations for people to go relax, have fun, and enjoy the heat. But that fun may be cut short after city officials issued a state of emergency and curfew for the city.
According to reports, the initial curfew started on Sunday, March 19 at 11:59 p.m. and continued until 6 a.m. on Monday, March 20. A commission meeting will take place today (March 20) to discuss further restrictions. For now, the City Manager reportedly plans to issue a similar curfew for Thursday (March 23) through Sunday (March 26).
The city cited “two shootings” and “excessively large and unruly crowds” as the reasons for the curfew. In the restricted areas, businesses were ordered to shut down before 11:59 p.m. with an exception for delivery only.
Hotels in the area were allowed to continue operating beyond 11:59 p.m. as long as they were servicing hotel guests. According to the press release, the curfew was put in place to help officers “mitigate dangerous and illegal conduct.” This is the third year in a row that a curfew was placed on the City of Miami Beach.
The emergency measures were issued after two fatal shootings took place over the weekend. The first incident happened on Friday night (March 17) at 10:41 p.m. near 7th street Ocean Drive. When officers arrived at the scene they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where one man died and the other reportedly remains in critical condition.
About 28 hours later the second fatal shooting occurred. The gunshots were heard on Ocean Drive and 11th street – a mere 2-minute drive from the first shooting. One male was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died. Another injured victim was treated on-site and released.
