‘The Little Mermaid’ Rakes In $117.5M At The US Box Office Opening Weekend

“The Little Mermaid” has officially shut naysayers down with a very lucrative opening weekend! 

As previously reported, the live-action remake of the 1989 animated film premiered on May 26. The movie, which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, has faced a lot of criticism from people who weren’t happy to see a Black woman score the leading role. Many disappointed with the remake’s casting have even said they plan to boycott the film. However, it seems that “The Little Mermaid” did just fine without the support of the skeptics. 

According to reports, over the weekend the film brought in $117.5 million at the US box office, making history as the fifth-best opening for Memorial Day weekend. Currently, “The Little Mermaid”  has a 95% audience score on rotten tomatoes.

However, reports claim that IMDB has had to adjust some of its audience ratings overseas because the film was subjected to review-bombing, which is when people who haven’t seen the movie post negative reviews. 

A statement from IMBD reportedly said,

“Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied. Although we accept and consider all votes received by users, not all votes have the same impact (or ‘weight’) on the final rating. When unusual voting activity is detected, an alternate weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system.”

On Friday (May 26), Halle Bailey took to Twitter to share her excitement over her latest project. She said, 

“can’t believe it today is the day!! the little mermaid is out everywhere in theaters now this was my first time ever doing a film like this, and words can’t describe how immensely grateful I am to have had this experience with such a beautiful group of people …please go watch and enjoy with your loved ones!!”

She also reacted to news about the projected gross for the movie.
