Eve Says She Had To Prove To Men In The Music Industry That She Wrote Her Own Lyrics: ‘That Would Annoy Me’
Eve’s writing skills aren’t anything to play with!
In October the BBC released “First Ladies of Hip Hop,” a three-part docuseries highlighting the battles and hardships women in the hip hop space had to endure. The project features female music legends such as DJ Spinderella, Rah Digga, Sha Rock, Yo-Yo, and many more!

Philly native Eve also appears on screen and talks about the challenges she faced as not just a rapper but also a writer. According to the “Gangsta Lovin’” artist, men in the industry would often doubt that she was the one behind her lyrics. In a clip from the docuseries recently shared to the BBC’s social platforms, she reveals,
“I would walk into a studio and I’m like ‘All right well let’s start’ and people would be like, ‘Oh, where’s your writer?’ I’m like, ‘She’s here, she’s walked in. I’m here.’”
Eve continues,
“‘Cause they didn’t just didn’t believe that I wrote My own lyrics and I think it was just because of the eye rolls from men and the, like, ‘Oh God.’ Like, it – I mean you – it was [visuable] – it was audible. Like, you could hear people breathe…and that would annoy me.”
She adds,
“So, I had to show them.”
Eve released her first studio album, “Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady,” in 1999, and the project quickly hit the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart. “Scorpion,” Eve’s second studio album, debuted at number four, and her third project, “Eve-Olution,” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B/Hip-Hop song charts. In 2013, the Grammy Award winner released her latest project, “Lip Lock,” which reportedly sold 9,000 copies within its first-week sales, debuting at number 46 on the Billboard 200 chart.
