Mariah Carey Sued For $20 Million Over Alleged Copyright Infringement Of Hit Song ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’
Looks like someone is once again trying to reach into Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” bag.
It’s no secret that Mariah Carey’s 1994 tune has become the unofficial track of the holiday season. Reportedly, the song has sold 16 million copies worldwide, and, as of 2017, earned $60 million in royalties. Unfortunately for the multi-Grammy Award winner, the success of the cultural staple has attracted some legal issues thanks to a writing duo trying to get a piece of her Christmas pie.
According to reports, Mariah Carey was hit with a hefty lawsuit by two men – Andy Stone and Troy Powers – who penned a song with the exact same name. You may recall that Stone sued Mariah Carey last year for copyright infringement, arguing that she made “undeserved profits” off his version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which was released five years before the famed singer dropped her song. However, he let the lawsuit go a few months later.
In his latest suit with Powers, Stone reportedly claimed there are substantial similarities between their song and Mariah’s. The suit allegedly said,
“Carey has, without licensing, palmed off these works with her incredulous origin story, as if those works were her own. Her hubris knowing no bounds, even her co-credited songwriter doesn’t believe the story she has spun. This is simply a case of actionable infringement.”
Stone and Powers are reportedly seeking at least $20 million in damages.
