Former Bad Boy Rapper G. Dep Released From Prison After Serving Decade-Plus Sentence For 1993 Murder: ‘Free At Last’

Harlem rhymer G. Dep is a free man!

On Thursday (Apr. 4), G. Dep happily walked out of Fishkill Correctional Facility in Beacon, New York after nearly 15 years behind bars.

If you didn’t know, in October 1993, G. Dep ambushed and shot a Queens man during an attempted robbery before fleeing the scene. Unbeknownst to the “Let’s Get It” phenomenon, at the time, the victim, named John Henkel, died.

Dep ultimately confessed to the cold case crime in 2010, which later led to a murder conviction and a 15-year-to-life sentence in 2012. However, in December 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul granted the 49-year-old clemency.

His release was accompanied by family and friends, who recorded Dep’s re-entrance into society on a live broadcast.

An excited loved one said while shifting the camera toward the overjoyed lyricist,

“My boy home, my boy home!”

Following the pick-up, Dep and his close circle headed to breakfast at IHOP, where he sat in awe and gushed to his supporters:

“We at IHOP, everybody! It’s not a game! Free at last!”

AllHipHop told in an exclusive that, while incarcerated, Dep earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts and heavily focused on self-improvement and education.

Additionally, throughout the latter months of his jail time, he’s been offering updates to his fans through his Instagram profile.

Speaking of his past mistakes, he revealed to the outlet,

“I was at a point where I wasn’t doing anything that would’ve been fruitful in the long run because I wasn’t right. Everything was kind of a fruit of the poisonous tree. Everything that I was doing, it was alright on the surface, but it wasn’t really coming from a genuine place.”

Born Trevell Coleman, the New York native received much acclaim with his 2001 debut album, ‘Child of the Ghetto,’ which was unveiled under Diddy’s infamous Bad Boy Records imprint.
